**** License Renewal Guidelines ***

The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners now requires that ALL 30 CE credits must be obtained by December 31 of the year PRIOR to the license expiring. If a license expires on June 30, 2008 then all CE credits to qualify for renewal must be taken by December 31, 2007. The Licensees may still request, in writing a six month extension, but all CE credits must be obtained on or before the expiration date of the license (June 30). Questions??? 8 Hour Radiation Safety Update (8 CE Credits)

This course satisfies the Maryland 8-hour requirement for recertification for dental assistants.  It is an overview of dental radiography for dentists and hygienists desiring to update their skills.

CPR Renewal for Healthcare Providers (Relicensure Requirement)

Course is designed for all members of the dental team who need to renew CPR requirements for relicensure.  CPR Instructors are affiliates of the American Heart Association (AHA).  Held at MSDA classroom facility.  

*Please review the AHA current manual prior to attending class. Updates will be given. If you are need of an updated manual, please call the MSDA office and we will give you a source for aquiring this manual.

Expanded Functions (General Dentistry and/or Orthodontics as permitted by Maryland Law)

Prerequisites:
1.  High School Graduate or Equivalent
2.  Verification and commitment letter from employing dentist (All clinical practice takes place at the student's place of employment.)
3.  Experience in a dental office to participate in the course.
4.  Have a working knowledge of basic oral anatomy, dental terminology and basic infection control.

  • Certificates of Completion granted at successful completion of course. There is a $10.00 fee for replacement certificates.
  • Radiology certification preferred, but is not mandatory.
  • Successful completion of this course prepares the assistant for the Maryland Board Qualification Examination (QDA\QOA).

Infection Control Diseases Update (2 CE Credits)

Review and update your Dental Infection Control Program to
ensure continued compliance with the CDC Guidelines for
 Infection Control, while earning mandatory continuing
 education for dental relicensure. This course also fulfills the
 MOSH mandated employer annual training and the state board
 approved inflection control credit for radiation techs.

Introduction to Basic Dental Assisting (Chairside)--A Howard Community College Course

***Note: This course is a Howard Community College Course, which is held at the Maryland State Dental Association.***

The students, upon successful completion of the course, will have job entry-level skills as a Dental Assistant and will receive a certificate of completion.

1. High School graduate or equivalent

Next Level of Root Canal Therapy: Lecture and HANDS ON Training (7 CE Credits)

A participating dentist should expect to learn the most updated information on the newest NiTi rotary systems, intra-canal vacuum techniques and diagnostic elements in Endodontics. Course outines include: diagnosis, bio-mechanical prep, activated irrigation, removal of smear layer, cancal sealer distribution, obturation, advanced trouble shooting. Hands On portion will include: Digital radiography, Apex locators, table mounted dental units for high/low speed motors and ultrasonic units, electric endodontic motors with contra angles and NiTi files, warm condensation- portable obturation units, gutta percha cones and paper joints, 3D animations, video presentations, and projection.

Oral Radiography Techniques

Prepares dental assistants who are employed in a dental office to sit for the DANB Dental Radiation Health and Safety Certification exam.
All clinical practice takes place at the student’s place of employment. This class prepares dental assistants who are employed in a dental office to sit for the DANB Dental Radiation Helath and Safety Certification Exam.

Prerequisites:
1. High school graduate or equivalency,
2. Letter from the employing dentist verifying employment and a commitment to your direct clinical supervision.
3. Must have working knowledge of basic oral anatomy, basic infection control and basic dental terminology.

  Pathway I
18 years of age
o 3 months (300 hours) full time in clinical setting in dental office
o Basic dental assisting course.
o Must be employed in dental office for direct clinical supervision.

Pathway II
o Basic dental assisting course prior to Board approved radiology course (18 years of age for Radiology), not to be taken concurrently.
o Must be employed in dental office for direct clinical supervision, unless classroom facility offers hands on Clinical. 

Certificates of Completion will be granted upon successful completion of course. There is a $10.00 fee for replacement certificate.
